Current Use Unrestricted Funds

Current use gifts are not invested in the endowment, but are spent immediately, providing the margin of excellence expected of Harvard by society as a whole.

In recent years, unrestricted giving has enabled the FAS dean to expand in numerous areas, including:

  • Dramatic increases in financial aid;
  • New advising programs for undergraduates;
  • New course offerings in the life sciences and physical sciences; and
  • Increased opportunities for undergraduates to study abroad.

Undergraduate Financial Aid

A strong financial aid program underpins Harvard College’s principles of selective admissions and need-based aid, which are integral to the unique composition of Harvard’s outstanding student body. Harvard’s commitment to these policies has not wavered in the face of increased costs and financial challenges, and alumni support continues to be essential.

  • 58% of undergraduates receive need-based scholarships from Harvard.
  • Due to the low and middle income initiatives, more than 3,000 families contribute at or below in-state public university tuition for a Harvard education.
  • At this time, the financial aid program is not fully endowed, reinforcing the need for current use gifts.
